Living in Scotland, I am lucky to be not too far from the treasure trove of natural beauty and rich history of Inverness-shire. With everything from Gruffalo trails to castles, the region offers a plethora of activities that are sure to charm both children and adults alike. Here are my top five things to do with kids in Inverness-shire:
Explore Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness
No visit to Inverness-shire is complete without a trip to the iconic Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness. Urquhart Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s medieval past. Kids will love exploring the ancient ruins, climbing the towers, and learning about the castle’s storied history through interactive exhibits. Afterward, embark on a Loch Ness cruise to search for the elusive Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie.” Keep your eyes peeled for the mythical creature as you cruise along the tranquil waters of the loch. Top tip: wrap up warm, even in the summer it can be extremely cold, but if you are lucky enough to get good weather, cruising Loch Ness is an experience like no other.
Go on a Wildlife Safari
Inverness-shire is home to an abundance of wildlife, making it the perfect destination for a family-friendly wildlife safari. Head to the Cairngorms National Park, where you can spot native Scottish wildlife such as red deer, red squirrels, and golden eagles in their natural habitat. Join a guided wildlife tour or venture out on your own along one of the park’s many hiking trails. Don’t forget to pack a pair of binoculars and a camera to capture photos of the majestic creatures you encounter along the way. We have been lucky enough to spot red squirrels on each of our visits.
Visit the Highland Wildlife Park
For an up-close and personal wildlife experience, be sure to head slightly south and visit the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie. Home to a diverse collection of animals from around the world, this award-winning wildlife park offers an unforgettable day out for the whole family. Kids will delight in seeing rare and endangered species such as Amur tigers, snow leopards, and European bison. There is one part you can drive your car through so you can get really up close to the animals.
Take a Steam Train Ride
Step back in time and experience the magic of steam train travel aboard the Strathspey Railway. Departing from Aviemore, this scenic heritage railway takes passengers on a journey through the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Kids will love the thrill of riding a real steam train and imagining themselves as passengers from a bygone era. I took my son on this when he was in the grips of a Thomas the Tank Engine obsession and it was magical seeing his reaction.
Enjoy Outdoor Adventures in Glen Affric
For families who love the great outdoors, a visit to Glen Affric is a must. Often referred to as Scotland’s most beautiful glen, Glen Affric boasts gorgeous lochs, ancient forests, and dramatic mountain scenery. If your kids are a bit older and are up for a long walk, lace up your hiking boots and explore one of the many family-friendly walking trails that wind their way through the glen.
